Tasks
Three daily jobs and a lifetime list, on the minimap orb, each naming what it pays.
Tasks are the game's to-do list: three jobs drawn fresh each day, and a fixed lifetime list under them that walks a new account through everything at home.
Opening it
::tasks, or the Tasks orb on the minimap column, which is the permanent door and the reason most people find the list at all. ::tasks list prints it in chat instead.
The daily three
Three jobs a day, drawn per player from a pool, and they reset with the day. Each row names what it pays as item icons rather than as a promise, so you can see the reward before deciding whether the job is worth it.
Every content system in the game feeds them - kills, clues, gathering, thieving, raids - so a daily task is usually something you were about to do anyway.
The lifetime list
Under the dailies sits a fixed list that never resets. Most of it is a route through the home area for a new account: bank something, kill something, steal from the gem stall, run a Barrows trip, read a pact. Above and below that route sit the milestone rows - a few for voting, a few for time played.
The route deliberately includes a task the accounts that start at level 1 can reach on their first evening, because every other row on it is weeks away for a Trained or Realism account.
What tasks are for
They are the cheapest way to find out what the server has. A task that pays you to visit the gem stall is really telling you the gem stall exists, and the reward is the reason you read the line.
